Our team is back from the 2024 MADE Show! This past weekend, Bike Friday’s President, Hanna Scholz along with our marketing coordinator, Daniel, bike expert, Walter and two members of our production and service teams, Jeff and Matt joined 250+ other bike builders and brands in Portland, Oregon’s Zidell Yards for another great MADE Bike Show. We had a blast connecting with other bike builders and brands and fellow mini-velo enthusiasts from all over the world. We could not miss this chance to showcase the latest innovations happening at Bike Friday too! Special thanks to the MADE organizers for putting on such a great event in the Pacific Northwest.

Key highlights from the show:
  • “Project BFB”: World’s Lightest Bosch E-Bike
  • Ultra Light pakiT
  • Kenda Tires Booth Bike Friday

World’s Lightest Bosch E-Bike

Our Bosch x Bike Friday collaboration e-bike prototype a.k.a. “Project BFB” was featured in two booths at this year’s MADE Show. The first one was on display in the Bosch/VPL Booth. This ultra-light model featured the SRAM Apex AXS wireless shifting and is only 33 lb! The handlebars, painted to match the Enno Orange frame, are also handmade in-house and the bike rolls on Schwalbe Billy Bonkers.

The second Bosch Bike Friday, featured in our booth, was fitted with a Shimano Alfine 11 speed internally geared hub with a Gates carbon belt drive, Ritchey drop bars, a Wald front basket, mounted directly on to the frame. On this basket was a To-Go Bag from Take-A-Trip, the makers of the All-Packa/Diamond Llama Frame bags. This prototype was built for Willie Hatfield’s partner, Kelsey, who chose the new Powerstone paint job for her custom build.

This Powerstone Bosch Bike Friday was featured on PathLessPedaled’s newest Youtube video, check it out below. Thank you Russ!

Ultra Light pakiT

This 15 lb ultra light pakiT is the first prototype using a new front wheel locking mechanism, which we designed based on customer feedback. This allows customers to be able to push their bikes on the front wheel when the bike is folded for easy transport when not riding the bike e.g. inside buildings or public pedestrian only places. This first prototype was built for Bike Friday President Hanna, before this year’s Sea Otter Bike Show. Be on the lookout for updates on these new pakiT features!

Bike Friday All-Packa in the Kenda Tires booth

Kenda is our go-to tire supplier for our All-Packa bikepacking model due to their incredible quality and unique, high-performance options in 20″ wheel sizes. When they asked us to build a special All-Packa for their booth we could not say no! We got to work handcrafting a unique All-Packa with a recently-released fade paint job. Show attendees were amazed at the quality and detail you can achieve with a powder coat finish. This All-Packa was fitted with their 20 x 2.4″ Kenda Booster Pro Tubeless tires and a Limited Edition Standard Professional Saddle courtesy of Brooks England.

The other Bike Fridays at the 2024 MADE Show

We also showcased an All-Packa fully geared up for bikepacking, which also featured the 20×2.4″ Kenda Booster Pro tires and a Brooks B17 Special saddle. It featured an olive/tan saddle bag, from our next door booth neighbors, Outer Shell, thank you to them!

We also showed off an All-Packa frame kit, painted in our new Powerstone paint job upgrade. This hammertone paint job is done in-house and has quickly gained popularity after a limited release earlier this year. It is now an upgrade option on most Bike Friday models. This All-Packa featured some custom bags made by Fairweather, a branch of Blue Lug, our dealer from Tokyo.

Bike Friday Staff share their favorite moments from the MADE Show

Daniel and his Diamond Llama

“I packed half of our show material (4 out of the 7 bikes total) inside my 3 series sedan, folded and packed my Power Raspberry Diamond Llama and made my way up to Portland on Thursday morning. I was so excited to bring my personal bike to this year’s MADE Show. When I originally chose the frame color, I knew I wanted it to stand out if I ever brought it to the MADE Show. I chose the Diamond Llama because of its All-Road/ATB capabilities. The 1×9 drivetrain, disc brakes and 20 x 2.125” Kenda K-Rad tires performed well during the Thursday evening ride through Forest Park and kept me out of trouble as I descended down to Chris King’s Headquarters. In preparation to show-off my bike I picked up a few of my favorite finishing bits from some of my favorite local brands. I had my favorite Brooks Team Pro saddle and Fat Paw foam lock-on grips from Wolf Tooth Components. I attached a Portland Design Works Timber to Town front basket to our lowrider front rack in order to carry all of the free show swag.

My show highlights include: Co-Motion‘s hand painted frames, seeing Liminal Machine Work‘s first batch of custom frames built in Springfield, Oregon by Co-Motion/Bike Friday alumni, Brian Sorensen. I am stoked to see the frames that will come out of his new venture! “

Walter and his All-Packa

“Attending the 2024 MADE Show was a blast! I made my way to Portland on an Amtrak chartered bus with my All-Packa folded up by my side. Once there, I was thrilled to see even more 20″ wheels on display than last year. Destroy’s 20” party bike was an absolute highlight, bringing some serious fun to the show. Schön’s bike, with its amazing in-house machined and anodized components, really stood out with its unique unicycle design. Monē’s bike, featuring brass elements, was another beauty. I’m pretty sure they had the smallest wheels at the show, and they rightly earned a spot among the award winners.

Seeing Bike Friday alumnus Rob English‘s custom time trial bike was another highlight along with BTCHN Bikes’ GeoShift bike. Honestly, I still can’t figure out why it didn’t win any awards. Squid Bikes featured a sweet Graffiti paint scheme, which used to Spray.Bike’s paint pens. On the practical side, Campagnolo’s free water was a lifesaver—if you can’t afford their famous wine corkscrew, at least you can grab a drink! But what really took my breath away were the Dario Pegoretti bikes, these were true works of art on two wheels! Finally, I got to meet Lynette from White Industries in person—after chatting with her for so long, it was great to finally put a face to the name.”

Matt

“I didn’t get but a couple hours to see the show and meet folks, but I still saw so much cool stuff and spoke with a good number of passionate cyclists and builders. I loved the energy in the building from all of the talented and creative designers, engineers, builders and painters. So much talent, passion and dedication under one roof. It was good to see female and BIPOC builders and brand owners, Significant Other (female owned) showed some very thoughtful bikes. Wheatfall Cycles had modern bikes with classic designs. Got to meet a few biking heroes, Chris Chance of Fat Chance Cycles was very gracious and chatted with me for 20+ minutes, also got to talk to Ronnie Romance of Ron’s Bikes, one of the coolest dudes on two wheels. Aside from being so dark, the venue was a perfect backdrop for the show. A gritty workspace much like the workshops where all those beautiful bikes were crafted. Talking with folks about Bike Friday was a lot of fun. Even after 32 years, still not really anything like us out there. Although, Rob English and Fat Chance had full size bikes that folded and fit into cases.
Bike Friday has a great story to tell and great bikes to sell.”

Other standout moments from the 2024 MADE Show:
  • Danielle from Schon Bikes explained some of her anodizing methods. We were so impressed with her work and so was the public — Her disco bike won People’s Choice Award and will be featured on an upcoming cover of Bicycling Magazine. Congratulations to Danielle and the Schon team!
  • Mini-velos had a huge presence at the show with over 15 featuring at least one 20″ wheel, an increase from the 4 during last year’s show.
  • Chasing big wheels around Forest Park on mini-velos with Phil from Kyoot Bikes
