Decades old fun!

You know how some people review things they love right away, and then after a while they hate it because it just wasn't durably built? I'm going to review right away something incredibly durable.
I've known for years of my in-laws late '90s family tandem, and knew that when my son would outgrow out Haul-a-day I'd try to get him on it. Well, pandemic hit and we left home (and my Haul-a-day) to hide at my in-laws' country house. Which gave me time to retrofit the old tandem from fitting a 10 year old to a 3 years old stoker.
Todd helped me spec the parts (thanks!), and I was very proud to do it all by myself today. Installing crank shorteners was easy, even without a pedal wrench. I used a whoopie-un to replace the handle bars so they got closer to the stoker seat. I did have to saw off a chunk of the original seat mast so the saddle would be as low as possible, but a little WD-40 was my friend. The niño LOVED his first real bicycle ride.
I still need to tweak things here and there, but I am SO impressed that after about 20 years in storage the shifting was pretty darn good, the brakes only needed minimal adjustment, and even the tubes held air!
Bike Friday builds amazing quality bikes that you can pass down for generations (literally plural! From grandpa to grandson!), that can easily be maintained by a novice, and that make 3 year old boys happy (and so chatty. He never talks that much on the cargo bike!). What more can you ask for???

A Transcontinental Tandem Tour

Our Family tandem took us from Eugene, Oregon to our home in Annandale, Virginia. jo's blog on crazyguy explains our trip in detail. Our little tandem was a magnificent steed, with front hub drum brake and generator for our lighting system. The drum brake served us well for many long descents, as we were loaded heavy with camping/cooking gear.

Traveler Tandem

Over the years we have ridden four different tandems, including a Bike Friday Tandem Two'sday folding bike and now we decided to start Tandeming again and we are really happy with our new Bike Friday Travel Tandem. We just got back from our first adventure on this tandem, three weeks of riding in France and Italy and we are really impressed with this bike, wow. We rode on the Amalfi coast in Italy and on the island of Corsica and the bike did extremely well up a lot of hills and in some crazy traffic.

We are now looking for more places to ride this great tandem.

Life, and bike are good

Twice we have been to Europe on our Bike Friday Family Tandem Bikes. Many times in the back of the Sienna, across country. We gave up on the full size Tandem for our city tours. No bike is easy to take apart, and reassemble. But we did it. At 80, we enjoy our local jaunts, and occasional 20 miler. Life, and bike are good.

Nice family bike

We bought our tandem when my son was 1. His Kettler seat suspended from the back seat mast, my wife stoked. Just when he hit the limit of the seat he was 36 inches tall. We inverted the rear bars and got some small pedal clips and presto - I captain and he the 4 year old stoker. My wife rides alongside and we feel safe and are very happy with the bike, the flexibility. Great family time and a great way to get our son into biking. We send out some great Photo Christmas cards of the family on the bike, getting many comments about our bike and less fortunately of my "thingie" in bike shorts. My mother in law looks at me differently now... not sure if it's the bike...

I saw your tandems in this week’s email, including the Family Tandem. My Family Tandem is a triple. Do you still make that model? We sure ran that rig in a lot of configurations while the kids were growing up, usually with the youngest in a child seat — four riders. I have a pile of cranks of varying lengths. We drew much attention. I still have the bike. I may clean it up this summer and make the kids lift my dead legs on the pedals so they know what I had to do all those years.

    • Walter

Victor, the triple tandem is still something we (admittedly quietly) still offer. Glad to hear how much you enjoyed yours!

  2. Terry Nelson

Do your tandem bikes come with independent pedaling systems ?

    • Walter

Terry, the tandems can come with an independent pedaling system but there is only one manufacturer of such a system that would work on our bikes and they are not readily available.

  3. Simon Berry

I’m looking for travel cases for our Family Tandem. I’m UK-based so importing them is probably not a sensible (or affordable) option. Would you be willing to tell me their size so I can look for a suitable pair of suitcases here in the UK.
    Thanks

    • Walter

Simon, sometimes cases with the same internal/external measurements have wheel wells in the wrong place so the measurements alone are not always sufficient. I would suggest getting a list of the suitcases we know work for your particular year and model from our service department to make sure you get the right thing. You can contact service@bikefriday.com.

  4. mike scott

Hi – could you please tell me the length of a Bike Friday Family Tandem, complete with wheels, unfolded?

    • Walter

Mike, it’s about 87.5″ for a medium size. I’ll also add that since you mentioned folding, the Family Tandem does not fold. If you’re looking for a folding tandem, you’ll want to look at the Tandem TwosDay instead.

12 years ago i bought an XL tandem converted to QXL from Steve Strickland. It was a beautiful tandem which my wife i enjoyed riding/touring , We rode in my home malaysia and alot in melbourne Australia. At 60 my wife stopped riding so converted the Q to single,At 77 i still enjoy riding the Q. thank you Bike Friday

Our Family Tandem Triple was the BEST family bike EVER. When my kids were growing up, it would fit the three of us (or two of us) as soon as they could sit safely – pedaling or not. We rode it weekly in a school bike bus and it has been awesome. Now that the kids are older, I adjusted the back seat and handle height and hubby and I take it out regularly for fun. It has been bomber. I also had a bucket bike – with or without electric assist, but riding together on the Family Tandem, the kids got great exercise too, while I was in control in our city traffic. And it built great sense of teamwork and collective success when we’d make it to the top of a hill together. The size made us quite visible so cars gave us so much room. After 13 years, we still love our bike.

E-Assist Upgrade

Front Hub Drive (Class 1) – Available on all standard models New & Used

We have developed a lightweight, reliable, e-assist system using non-proprietary parts for serviceability.

The motor replaces the front hub with a motor optimized specially for our 20-inch and 16-inch wheel sizes. The battery and circuitry stow into frame bags for a discreet solution that delivers an enjoyable and intuitive riding experience up to 20 mph. This system utilizes a pedal-assist system, which engages the motor as you pedal (no throttle).

Front Fork of NWT with Hub Motor
A front hub E-assist motor fitted to a Bike Friday New World Tourist
Overview
  • This is a “class one” pedal assist. Max assisted speed 20mph. (these are key for many regional laws)

  • The standard batteries we use are 36 volt with a capacity of 450 watt hours. Estimated mileage in optimal conditions is 40-50 miles per charge

  • Also compatible with LIGO 10X battery upgrade (the only battery you can fly by air with your bike)

  • The whole kit adds only ~ 11lbs to your Bike Friday (for standard 36v/12ah)

  • The E-assist kit can be retrofitted on any Bike Friday.

  • Equipped with a clutch, which means less resistance when not using the electric assist

  • Great value when considering weight, function, and cost altogether. A high-quality investment.

  • 5 Levels of Assist
  • Non-proprietary, so if any part fails at nearly any point in the future, compatible replacements can be easily found even if the original manufacturer doesn’t exist anymore.

  • Cost: Please see the order form on this page for live pricing

Frequently asked questions

How many LiGo modules do I need?
We recommend at least 3 modules for standard rides. For longer distances or steeper terrain, 4 modules are advised.

How much weight does this add?
The equivalent battery capacity to our standard offering adds an additional 1.55 lbs per cell / 3 cells – 4.65 lbs / 4 cells – 6.2 lbs.
(As batteries must be transported in carry-on, this additional weight does not affect whether the bike or suitcase can be checked.)

Can I buy batteries separately or upgrade later?
Yes. If you wish to source your batteries directly from Grin Technologies, you can – just inform your sales rep. We also offer a converter kit if you want to upgrade to this option later or retrofit an existing e-assist system.

What certifications do these batteries have?
The LiGo 10X complies with UN38.3, EN15194, EN62133-2, FCC/IC/CE (EMC/EMI) and meets regulatory requirements for e-bike battery packs in most regions. If you require UL2271 certification (e.g., for New York), please see our All-Day offering, which has full UL2271 and UL2849 compliance.

What is the cost?
This price is subject to change; please check the order form or with your sales rep for current pricing.

OSATA

One Size Adjusts To All

An example of the size range that the Haul-A-Day can achieve

Because no two riders are built the same, we designed our cargo bikes with an adjustable, telescoping main frame. With just a quick adjustment, the OSATA frame adjusts to perfectly fit riders 4’6″(1.37m) to 6’4″(1.93m). Even in the largest setting, the wheelbase is a compact 47″, short enough to fit on bus, train and car racks. One bike that fits the whole family!

Adjusts in 4 Places!

This unique system not only adds versatility to who can ride your bike comfortably, but also greatly increases your ability to sell it in the future if you ever decide to do so.

Sizing

Most bikes on the market come in small, medium, or large. But we know your body doesn’t fit into a generic size – so why should your bike?

Your Bike Friday frame is Cut and welded to your exact measurements, not adapted from a generic size. We build bikes for riders across the full size spectrum – from very short riders (with inseam as short as 16 inches) to professional NBA players (6 foot 6 inches) – and we make the process as straightforward as possible.

Two Ways to Get Your Perfect Fit – You choose

Already have a bike you love how it fits? Then give us your current bike’s measurements. We’ll replicate that perfect fit on your new Bike Friday.

Never had a bike that fit right? No problem. Just provide your body measurements – height, inseam, weight, preferred riding style, and your age. From this, we will calculate a great fit for you.

How It Works

Our sizing consultants review everything: your measurements, your riding style, what you love about your current bike, and what you’d like to change. Then we build your frame to match you, cutting and welding it to size and installing your choice of components. This process gives you the best riding experience, maximum comfort.

A Bike Friday is Not adjusted, Not modified it’s Built specifically for you.

The result? Better comfort. Better performance. Better riding.

Ready to get started? Fill out your custom sizing form and let’s build your perfect bike.
