SRAM Spectro 3×7 hub adjustment

Symptoms

I’m only able to shift into two of the three gears on the SRAM 3×7 hub.

Causes

The cable to the SRAM 3×7 hub can stretch over time, misaligning the pin that lines up the pawls inside to hub. Also, failing to connect the shift cable back to the indicator chain properly can cause undesired behavior.

Solutions

If you ever think you are only getting “two gears instead of three,” you may need to make a simple periodic adjustment of the SRAM Spectro 3×7 hub cable.

There are two methods, try both and use the one which seems most effective for you.

The Slack Method

  1. Disconnect the cable from the 3×7 indicator chain by pressing the tab on the rectangular connector and pulling out the threaded cylindrical screw.
  2. Shift the 3×7 shifter to free the maximum amount of cable, i.e. so you can pull it towards the back of the bike.
  3. Reconnect the cable chain loosely, just putting just the very end into the ratchet.
  4. Shift back and forth to see how the adjustment worked. If it needs further tightening, slide only one “click” at a time into the connector.

The Tight Method (for RapidFire shifters)

  1. Disconnect the 3×7 indicator chain from the cable by pressing the tab on the rectangular connector and pulling out the threaded cylindrical screw.
  2. Shift the 3×7 shifter to take up the maximum amount of cable, i.e. so you can pull it towards the front of the bike.
  3. Reconnect the cable chain tightly, pushing the cylindrical screw into the ratchet as far as it will go. Pull the indicator chain with your thumb to test for residual slackness and re-connect if necessary.
  4. Shift back and forth to see how the adjustment worked. If further adjustment is necessary, loosen just one “click” at a time between tests.
