Description

Seeing the world as a pair, sharing the experiences and conversations together is truly the best aspect of tandem biking.  Our Family Tandem is highly adjustable so you can use the same tandem as a couple and later with a young child, through to adulthood. One tandem, for the whole family!

The Family Tandem is great for cruising your town or exploring a continent with your touring companion. It disassembles, rather than folds, so it fits in the back of almost any vehicle and packs into two Travelcases for airline travel as checked luggage.  If you need to fold your tandem quickly or often to fit in small spaces, the Two’sday will fit your needs well.

Features:

  • Custom sized to fit your body for both the Captain and the Stoker
  • Disassembles for easy storage and transport into a space 33x37x17” (84x94x43 cm)
  • Highly adjustable to allow different sized friends to ride with you, including kids
  • Low step-over height easier for smaller riders to get on and off
  • Industry Standard Parts for ease of repair in case of emergency

Upgrade and Accessory Options:

Electric Assist Option:

You can add an electric assist to this bike with a front hub motor. This is a Class I pedal assist and comes with a 430Whr 36V battery with ~90km (55mile) range. (In 2023 there may be an airline check-able LIGO battery available, but not currently)

Features of the 350W front hub motor:

  • No motor resistance or increased drivetrain wear, unlike a Shimano or Bosch mid-drive system
  • Very light! The whole system adds only ~ 11 lbs to your bike
  • With purchase of a third wheel, quickly convert your ebike back to a regular bike

With carefully considered design details throughout, like the industry-standard bottom bracket shell and bikepacking-style battery mount, your Bike Friday is the most adaptable and future-proof ebike on the market today. Want to upgrade your battery or motor five years from now? There’s no need to worry about proprietary standards!

Decades old fun!

You know how some people review things they love right away, and then after a while they hate it because it just wasn't durably built? I'm going to review right away something incredibly durable.
I've known for years of my in-laws late '90s family tandem, and knew that when my son would outgrow out Haul-a-day I'd try to get him on it. Well, pandemic hit and we left home (and my Haul-a-day) to hide at my in-laws' country house. Which gave me time to retrofit the old tandem from fitting a 10 year old to a 3 years old stoker.
Todd helped me spec the parts (thanks!), and I was very proud to do it all by myself today. Installing crank shorteners was easy, even without a pedal wrench. I used a whoopie-un to replace the handle bars so they got closer to the stoker seat. I did have to saw off a chunk of the original seat mast so the saddle would be as low as possible, but a little WD-40 was my friend. The niño LOVED his first real bicycle ride.
I still need to tweak things here and there, but I am SO impressed that after about 20 years in storage the shifting was pretty darn good, the brakes only needed minimal adjustment, and even the tubes held air!
Bike Friday builds amazing quality bikes that you can pass down for generations (literally plural! From grandpa to grandson!), that can easily be maintained by a novice, and that make 3 year old boys happy (and so chatty. He never talks that much on the cargo bike!). What more can you ask for???

A Transcontinental Tandem Tour

Our Family tandem took us from Eugene, Oregon to our home in Annandale, Virginia. jo's blog on crazyguy explains our trip in detail. Our little tandem was a magnificent steed, with front hub drum brake and generator for our lighting system. The drum brake served us well for many long descents, as we were loaded heavy with camping/cooking gear.

Traveler Tandem

Over the years we have ridden four different tandems, including a Bike Friday Tandem Two'sday folding bike and now we decided to start Tandeming again and we are really happy with our new Bike Friday Travel Tandem. We just got back from our first adventure on this tandem, three weeks of riding in France and Italy and we are really impressed with this bike, wow. We rode on the Amalfi coast in Italy and on the island of Corsica and the bike did extremely well up a lot of hills and in some crazy traffic.

We are now looking for more places to ride this great tandem.

I saw your tandems in this week’s email, including the Family Tandem. My Family Tandem is a triple. Do you still make that model? We sure ran that rig in a lot of configurations while the kids were growing up, usually with the youngest in a child seat — four riders. I have a pile of cranks of varying lengths. We drew much attention. I still have the bike. I may clean it up this summer and make the kids lift my dead legs on the pedals so they know what I had to do all those years.

    • Walter

Victor, the triple tandem is still something we (admittedly quietly) still offer. Glad to hear how much you enjoyed yours!

  2. Terry Nelson

Do your tandem bikes come with independent pedaling systems ?

    • Walter

Terry, the tandems can come with an independent pedaling system but there is only one manufacturer of such a system that would work on our bikes and they are not readily available.

  3. Simon Berry

I’m looking for travel cases for our Family Tandem. I’m UK-based so importing them is probably not a sensible (or affordable) option. Would you be willing to tell me their size so I can look for a suitable pair of suitcases here in the UK.
    Thanks

    • Walter

Simon, sometimes cases with the same internal/external measurements have wheel wells in the wrong place so the measurements alone are not always sufficient. I would suggest getting a list of the suitcases we know work for your particular year and model from our service department to make sure you get the right thing. You can contact service@bikefriday.com.

  4. mike scott

Hi – could you please tell me the length of a Bike Friday Family Tandem, complete with wheels, unfolded?

    • Walter

Mike, it’s about 87.5″ for a medium size. I’ll also add that since you mentioned folding, the Family Tandem does not fold. If you’re looking for a folding tandem, you’ll want to look at the Tandem TwosDay instead.

12 years ago i bought an XL tandem converted to QXL from Steve Strickland. It was a beautiful tandem which my wife i enjoyed riding/touring , We rode in my home malaysia and alot in melbourne Australia. At 60 my wife stopped riding so converted the Q to single,At 77 i still enjoy riding the Q. thank you Bike Friday

Our Family Tandem Triple was the BEST family bike EVER. When my kids were growing up, it would fit the three of us (or two of us) as soon as they could sit safely – pedaling or not. We rode it weekly in a school bike bus and it has been awesome. Now that the kids are older, I adjusted the back seat and handle height and hubby and I take it out regularly for fun. It has been bomber. I also had a bucket bike – with or without electric assist, but riding together on the Family Tandem, the kids got great exercise too, while I was in control in our city traffic. And it built great sense of teamwork and collective success when we’d make it to the top of a hill together. The size made us quite visible so cars gave us so much room. After 13 years, we still love our bike.
