SRAM 3×7 hub maintenance

Symptoms

What do I need to do to keep the three-speed hub working properly? (This refers to the SRAM 3×7 three-speed hub, formerly the SACHS 3×7 hub.)

Solutions

The 3×7 hub on your Bike Friday will require fairly little maintenance. Every two to three months of regular riding (somewhat more often if you ride in poor or wet conditions) lubricate the hub.

Lay the bike on its left side, and dribble about a teaspoon of machine grade oil into the right side axle opening where the small indicator chain goes in. We use the Phil Wood Tenacious Oil brand at the Bike Friday factory, although 30w motor oil and even Tri-Flow brand chain lubricant may be used. Every couple of seasons you may consider having the hub overhauled. It is not complex to do. Most good bike shops will be able to do this, or consider rolling up your sleeves and try it yourself! You can order a diagram from Bike Friday to help you out. Check our Document Library for the latest illustrations.
