Touring the Netherlands with two Bike Friday bikes

Bike path in the Netherlands

We recently heard from Bike Friday owner Steve O. about his frequent travels to The Netherlands, here’s Steve to tell you more about it:

.

We fell in love with bike touring riding standard bikes in the Netherlands, a cyclist paradise.

And I fell in love with folding bikes on my local commute to office.

.
The Netherlands is very bike friendly!
.
Clear road signage and cycle friendly trains are part of what makes the Netherlands ideal for cycling!
.
When I had the chance to spend a month cycling in the Netherlands on a work sabbatical a few years ago it just felt kind of unfair to leave my tikit at home while I went off to have a good time riding, so I did the right thing — packed my tikit (a Hyper-fold with Nexus 8 internal hub, modified with extra-large chainwheel and Northroad handlebars) and off we went.  Had a great time!
.

One trip led to another, Tikit-envy sparked acquisition of her own Tikit by my spouse, release of the Silk with Alfine-11 and Gates Carbon drive led to augmenting our stable of Bike Friday machines, release of the pakiT is leading to another Alfine-11 / Gates Carbon addition in the next couple months.  Funny how that happens.  Can a person ever have too many bikes?

Had a fun time documenting the experience of several tours in a blog, http://footloosefietser.blogspot.com/

.
Our Bike Friday folders have been troopers.  Zero mechanical problems, easy to take on trains when needed, conversation starters, companions in lots of great riding.
.
We’d love to return to Netherlands, and hopefully will, but are thinking now about a possible Silk + pakiT tour in Cuba…  and a nice ride along the SF Bay trail this weekend.
.
Thank you to the Bike Friday team!

  1. I agree. I rode my new World Tourist in the Netherlands in 2018 and 2019 and I cannot think of a better place to tour on a bike. Great bike paths and hotels and bed and breakfasts everywhere. In 2019 I set up my bike at the airport and rode away. In 2019 I rode from Amsterdam to Copenhagen. Germany and Denmark were very good for bike touring however the Netherlands remains the best.
