I wasn't a cyclist until in my 40's when I decided to take the plunge and bought a SatRDay recumbent. At the time I was teaching Japanese at the U of Oregon and driving a mile each way to work. Commuting by bike never occured to me. When I got a research grant to go to Japan, I took along my SatRDay and toured Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji and Tokyo. I also met and rode with many passionate Bike Friday riders in Japan. In 2003 when I became Bike Friday's 'Ambassador to Asia,' I got a Pocket Crusoe for commuting, then a Pocket Rocket Pro to keep up with the BF lunch ride and event rides.
