derailleur instead of hub?

Why did you guys put a derailleur on this bike instead of a hub? I mean, it's supposed to be used for commuting in the city, right? Wouldn't the ability to change gears while stopped in traffic and the weather resistance of hub gears be better suited for this purpose?
what kind of derailleur?

How soon is "pretty soon" for Bike Friday?
It takes 4-6 weeks just to get a model currently in production.
sooner than never :)

We want to get feedback on this first model and then we'll go from there. No particular date.

gear choices
We want to make this bike available with a wide range of options, and thus designed the first bike around a rear derailleur as this requires the most consideration. We intend to offer an 8spd internally geared version pretty soon. The derailleur bike is lighter, and with the drive chain folding to the inside and the fixed chainstay length, there are no chain management issues. Yes, the prime directive was for a city bike, but the tikit rides so well that it is far more versatile than that; it's ability to be fitted with a wide range of equipment options reflects that.
