On the shore of the Konigssee at the end of our trip on the Bodensee to
Konigssee Radweg (bicycle way). Left to right: Shari Hogshead, Paul Gauthier, Mike Frederick, Bonnie Frederick and Lindy Bruce. Bikes left to right Shari's Pocket Crusoe, Paul's New World Tourist, Mike & Bonnie's Tandem Traveler, Jay's Pocket Rocket and Lindy's Pocket Rocket.
The incomparable Shari Hogshead planned every aspect of our trip to southern Bavaria where we spent two and a half weeks in June 2008.
The Bodensee-Konigssee Radwag is just one of many of the signed bikeways in Germany. Along it one travels through forests and villages, low traffic roads and dedicated bike ways for 432 kilometers. Although this is in the foothills of the Alps, it is not too hilly. The route is pretty easy to follow as long as you keep your eyes open for the small signs. Paul always managed to find the route when we lost our way.
Paul's secret was to keep handy the small book that contains maps of the route as well as descriptions of things to see along the way. Since the book is written in German, the maps were of more use to most of us. The elevation profiles always received careful attention!
We averaged about 60 km per day. At the end of the day we stayed in small guest houses that had character and charm as well as being reasonably priced. A fine breakfast buffet is always provided. It is a great advantage monetarily and time wise to get dinner at the guest house if that is an option.
We took days off for hiking in the mountains which is another passion all six of us share.
We used the wonderful German train system to get us and our bikes to the start of the trip and then back from our endpoint. The trains are comfortable, reasonably priced, travel often and are easy to combine with bike travel.
Germany is biking heaven, I can't wait to go back!
