![]() Bike Friday is riding high on the honor of receiving an inaugural sustainability award in hometown Eugene, Oregon. On June 1, Mayor Kitty Piercy presented the Bold Steps Toward Sustainablilty Award to Marketing Director Hanna Scholz at the Science Factory's BikeDay '07event. The award is a real acknowledgement of Bike Friday's expanded mission to be part of the solution to global oil dependency. Former Mayor Ruth Bascom, who was responsible for the extensive bike path system along the river here in Eugene, and representative Peter DeFazio, an avid cyclist who toured the Bike Friday factory in 2006, both attended the event, praising Bike Friday for being a 'green' company. All three people have been strong supporters of both small business initiative and cycling as an sustainable mode of transport - all we can say is you need friends in high places like these when you're on a sustainability mission! We remember Ruth fondly as attending our reception a few years ago for the World's Most Traveled Man Heinz Stucke - back then, Bike Friday were more about adventure and travel with a bicycle than sustainablility. Now, world events have caused us and every other conscious organization to reconsider what is really important for our future - and what we can do about it. The event stage was powered by solar power (Sponsered by the Eugene Water and Electric Board) - Bike Friday proudly runs on 100% wind power. Cumulous radio interviewed Hanna about the award - listen to what she had to say. Congratulations to all staff, customers and suppliers who help Bike Friday meet its sustainablilty goals each day.
