I wasn't a cyclist until I was in my 40's. At that time I was teaching Japanese and linguistics at a local university and driving one mile each way work. As a non-cyclist, commuting by bike did not occur to me.

When I received a research grant to go to Japan, I decided to take along a folding recumbent -- Bike Friday's SatRDay (no longer manufactured).

Over the next three years I spent my vacations touring Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji and Tokyo in my free time and fell in love with cycling.

To my delight, I met many passionate Bike Friday owners in Japan, where small wheels are widely utilized because compact bikes fit the lifestyle.

In 2003 I began working as Bike Friday's 'Ambassador to Asia.' I got a Pocket Crusoe for commuting, then a Pocket Rocket Pro to keep up with the Bike Friday lunch ride and event rides. Now I commute on my Express tikit or Speeding tikit.
